View Full Version : Broadband?

Okay, so I'm moving to NKY next month and found out the area we're moving to doesn't support Zoomtown (though Cincinnati Bell is the phone service provider, so figure that one out). So I need a new Broadband connection.
The easy answer is to say, "Go with Roadrunner, Bronze." Well, I would, but I'm not getting Cable at my new crib. Going back to DirecTV. $20 bucks cheaper per month for the exact same service.
So, any suggestions on a new Broadband service? Anybody have experience with any national companies? I know DirecTV offers a Broadband service, but is it any good? I need something comparable to Zoomtown or Roadrunner. Help!

Have you considered DSL? Although DSL is supposed to be faster than cable, I've always stood by the opinion that cable > DSL. It's still good though. A little expensive but worth checking out. Anything but dial up.

I've heard that it's only really worthwhile in places where you can't get cable or dsl...

Go with Roadrunner, Bronze. I'm almost positive you can get it independently of a cable package. Just call them up and ask them to hook you up with Roadrunner, but to keep their damned overpriced cable to themselves. I'm thinking about scrapping my cable package myself, but keeping Roadrunner.

lawdog is correct; I currently have roadrunner and no cable package. It's 44.95 a month, and I am completely satisfied with it.

My one major beef with not being able to do Zoomtown is that I have Custom Connections through Cincinnati Bell. For $100 a month, I get my home phone service with 200 minutes of free long distance and all kinds of calling features, Zoomtown broadband, and a decent cell plan (which might not be enough for some, but is plenty for me). Pretty nice to have it all in one package for a good price. I'm paying about $30 for Zoomtown through the package, so it's gonna piss me off to have to pay extra somewhere else for something Cinti. Bell should be offering to the entirety of their customer base. Poop.

Guess that's what you get for moving to Kentucky! :p
(what do I know, I still use dial-up at home)

Does Time Warner even serve NKy? My bf lives south of covington in kenton co. and he's got Insight Broadband(here's a list of where they serve (http://www.insight-com.com/about/covington.html) ). It's pretty good, but he lives in the sticks so there's not a lot of competition for bandwidth. They've got satellite tv out there as well, so I guess you can get it separately from cable.

Kenton County is actually where I'm moving to, so this might be an option. I'll look into it. Thanks!

Time Warner frequently offers intro promotions for Roadrunner:
29.95 a month, sometimes three months, sometimes six, then jump to the 49.95. I think they're offering it now, but it expires on 12/24. it'll come back around.
there is currently no residential high speed service better than broadband cable.
if you know your new zip code, go here (http://www.timewarnercable.com/dispatcher/products;jsessionid=0000C12CXKGRBTM2P0ELRKYYJ3Y:-1?category=10056&expand=Y&rootCategory=10050&src=0homeHS0) and fill out the zip code query at the bottom of the page.

Cable is faster than DSL by the specs. Your isp might not allow fast speeds though.
Here in Newport, the fastest thing you can get is insightbb.com. They have a decent news server (netnews.insightbb.com) and a semi reasonable download rate. There doesnt seem to be any eveidence of a byte cap so this is good.
However, over the past few years, speeds have DROPPED. in 1998 upload speed was ~150-200 KiloBytesSec, now, dunno if its my putters, but upload is at 16KB :-O!. Download has dropped too. its gone from whatever you can get on off your pipe, to 350KBS. its been holding at 350 and still does, but 16KB up is horrible. Dont expect to play any games online and send attachments (or just send a movie clip).
1 HUGE thing you cant overlook, insight is cluleless unless your running win32. They have a "professional install" that is not professional at all. if you run *BSD or any *nix platform...forget about it. They came to my place and looked like lost puppies wondering what system was running what. That brings me to their IP regulations. As far as i know, you cannot run a webserver. i tried it once, although it was just to see, it wouldnt show. So plan on a VHost if you want something like that. if not, dsl actually can be run as a webserver last i checked in Ohio (~1 month ago).
The techincal help for your isp connection through insightbb...haha, well just is not there. i dont know what they drink down there, but its not good for them. Although im not one to pick on people or anything like that, but if you get really down or bored calling tech support can really be a pick me up.
Your only allowed to have 1 IP, its Dynamic. However it rarely changes. You can of course change it if you change your NIC (release and renew has NOT worked ever) but other than that it has been pretty solid. Only 1 day did it change in 4 years, and it actually changed 3 times in one day...dont ask me. Besides that it's pretty static.
insightbb.com is not really any better than roadrunner. There is not roadrunner in NKY, only insightbb.
Stay away from satellite, unless your running it for TV, then its by far the best. Satellite isp's are like dragging through the mud accidentally stepping in pitfalls.
Your TV line, if you even watch TV (i dont), then the cable is pretty bad. Alot of noise comes throught the lines and as far as i know, however im not educated in this field, almost all Digital Cable broadcasts are broadcasted in mpeg2 like satellite. However they are overly compressed. ive ran Digital Cable here in NKY for a month, and if you capture any video off it...forget about it. it's pretty nasty looking. DirecTV is remarkably cleaner. However, DirecTV does drop out in REALLY bad storms. Not for long though, usually for 1sec-5min. i rarely get drop outs. Our cordinates on the map support a nice feed. Satellite has a % of how much of a singal you get, i get 98% sometimes 99%. So Satellite is defiantely the way to go if you wanna watch TV, especially sports. My god there is like 80 trillion sport channels. Of course Satellite has always been that way.
Hope some of that helped.
Forgot, insightbb.com does support a isp package only. i think its like 45usd a month, however some people get the basic channels with just the isp, i dont since i run satellite. Not everybody does get the basic channels with just the isp pacakge, so im clueless on that.
Also forgot, what area you moving to that doesnt support DSL? i believe it because its ironicly the truth. Broadwing being one of the biggest suppliers of broadband in Midwest still seems like a chicken with its head cut off. insightbb.com will support, if you can get cable in that area, you can get their isp.

ok, as mentioned earlier in this thread, I still use dial-up  at home and am considering taking the plunge into high-speed internet. I'm checking out the broadband deals, but then I noticed Time Warner Cable has a Wireless offer for $19.95 installation and then only $3.95 a month. Compared to nearly $50 a month for broadband, this sounds too good to be true! But I know so little about this, can someone tell me about wireless in layman's terms, and if it would be a good thing to get vs. broadband at home? Thanks!

i would guess this is on top of the broadband charge murphy. they will just install a wireless router and wireless cards in your computer system(s). whatever your network connection is, you can buy this equipment yourself as well for under 100 bucks and it's pretty easy to install. again though you will still need to shell out the traditional charge for your internet connection.

I'm moving to Bromley and it turns out Insight is my only option. Bah. I was hoping to take advantage of Roadrunner's current specials.

If you're interested in DSL at all, you can check out www.dslreports.com to see what's available.
I've had DSL from 3 different carriers over the past 3 years in VA, and Chicago, and have been relatively satisfied. It is slower on the download side from what I understand (if cable is unrestricted that is) but it is more of a point-to-point connection, like phone service, rather than a shared network of "pipes", so if there are more people using the service in your area, DSL may be faster.
Plus DSL is supposed to be faster for uploading, and running a server is you can snag a fixed IP like I used to have. May not be of importance to you, but just the $.02 I've discovered over the last couple of years.
